Hiti Tau (Conseil National des ONG du Pays Maohi) is a popular, cultural NGO (non governmental organization) the objective of which is to get French Polynesia on UN's list of countries which are to be decolonized. Hiti Tau does not profess any religion or politics, but neither does it refrain from taking a stand on political matters. Hiti Tau is a forum for discussion and political debate about native peoples' right to self-government and other rights as well.

Hiti Tau identifies with Polynesian social groups and supports them by means of diverse developmental projects. Through these projects, Hiti Tau seeks to improve local produc-tion, while the cultural identity of the societal groups affected by the test bombings is protected, and it is seen to it that they are not excluded from the other societies.

Hiti Tau has launched projects within the following areas:

? Projects for the young within the fishing industry, animalfarming and horticulture.

? Projects for women within traditional medicine.

? Projects for environmental protection.

? Projects for training of organizational skills.

? Medical examinations of the population after 30 years of nuclear test bombings.
