Andia Y Varela visited Tahiti in 1774, and brought two Polynesian navigators with him back to Lima, Peru. He tells:"What made the biggest impression on me, considering the two indians, was that every evening they predicted what weather we could expect the following day, concerning wind, rain, sunshine, waves. Conditions of which they never made a wrong prediction. A knowledge that you could get jaloux of, because despite all the observations and registrations made by our navigators and astronomers, we still could not measure ourselves with their achievements."
